Whatever happened to programming?

Now I understand why I was so disappointed when trying programming as work, and more specifically, at the current place of work.

I thought coding would be what he calls "Phase One". It turned out to be mostly "Phase Two". Or as I wrote in my own log file, in either semi-lyrical or cranky formatting style (take your pick!):

The Phase Two work is uninteresting,
and when I get to the actual interesting Phase One,
my creative inclinations clash too much with that of my boss.

So all I have got is
Phase Two (which is uninteresting),
and warped Phase One (which is a pain).

(And by "a pain" I mean that I get told to make a car, and then the boss goes through my car with a welding kit because it doesn't look enough like a Lotus; and then he tells me to draw a picture, and afterwards paints mustaches on everybody in that picture. This is not a good way to encourage creativity.)

I get the impression that effective/worthwhile bosses are a rare breed, at least if their role is anything more complex than "prevent slacking".
